on the recent flood in beluran........

It can be pretty frustrating when you know a lot of action (I don't mean to be so excited over a disaster) is going on the other side of the world (I mean, Beluran) and I'm missing it, and all I can do is furiously tap on my phone with a toothpick (I mean, stylus) to orchestrate the whole drama (I mean, the disaster management plan)

Last week Beluran has seen one of its longest stretch of rain, falling for a few days non stop and the District Office calling for an Operational Room running 24 hours to update the disaster committee on the latest flood situation in the district. Week before that we had a meeting on our own level in the Health Office, where we drew up a few teams to be on-call when disaster strikes, listed the vehicles to be used and source of food supply in case we need to send rescue and relief teams out. It seemed like our prediction and preparation was right, towards the end of last week the flood alarm has been sounded, three areas has been declared flooded and few of our staffs need to be evacuated to higher grounds.

On Wednesday night, a distress call was received from Tangkarason, an area that can be reached in 3 1/2 hours land route, noting to us about a mother that has come in to the clinic with incomplete miscarriage and possibly bleeding. They shouldn't have problem sending the lady out but the road was flooded and not before we could do proper assessment of the situation, their satellite phone, the only form of communication to the area was disrupted (no hand phone connectivity here). I almost sent a 300HP boat out to the area, a journey that would take 5 hours in good visibility and fair weather condition through the open sea. On reconsidering the options, I aborted the plan as it would be too risky to send a team out into the rough sea at night. Further more, the journey would take well more than 6-7 hours in the dark. The flood might have subsided by the time they reach and it would be safer then to send the patient out by road, provided she gets through the night. With communications disconnected throughout the night (my nursing sister tried calling them until past midnight) I had to put my faith on the senior staffs there to do the right thing - which they did, as the flood subsided they mobilised the ambulance and sent the lady to the nearest hospital - which is in a neighbouring district.

Flood might have subsided slightly, but it continued to rain. More areas were declared flooded by the next day. I had to caution the clinics and hospital for any unusual rise in diarrhoeal cases while be on alert also for dengue cases.

On Friday, it continued to rain until one of my nurses had to be evacuated, reportedly her house was submerged under water (probably reaching roof la). By afternoon, I've received 2 other distress call from 2 separate areas affected by the flood about food shortage - in Sg.Sungai and Paitan. Since I was already in KK at that time attending tender meeting for the collapsing Maternal and Child Health Clinic, I had to orchestrate the whole drama back in Beluran via phone calls and smses. Subsidised reload-cards were dished out to officers involved in flood management and some staffs were summoned to work over-time. 2 communities were stranded for at least 4 days and we had to organise food relief for them.

Unfortunately by late evening we still could not find a supplier willing to supply such large amount of grocer at such short notice, and when time was pressing more desperately, I had to pick up the phone and call for personal favour from a guy, who promised that I could just call him anytime for anything, in return for a little help I've offered earlier. Not my proudest moment in history, but I'd rather think of my stranded staffs with depleting food-stock.

Stocks had to be transported in from Sandakan, so we dispatched one vehicle to bring in the goods, and another the next morning. Two vehicles went out to the affected areas up north of Beluran and by afternoon, they managed to send relief to Paitan. When they attempted Sg.Sungai, they had to reassess the situation as the flood area covered about 400m wide and up to 10 feet deep. The vehicle definitely could not go in, and since there was no hand phone connectivity there, our staffs from Sg.Sungai were not aware that help was there. But somehow they managed to contact them and brought the food in, using a small powered boat. While there, the relief team had time to join in a gotong royong to clean up the clinic.

Flood Operation Room was adjourned by the District Officer on Sunday. I would have to go up to Paitan and Sg.Sungai soon on a follow up to assess damage and put up proposal for repairs as soon as possible, hopefully this coming Thursday... and I'm bringing my camera along.

bright sunshiny day.........

Finally, after a week long of downpour and at best, drizzle, Beluran is seeing sunshine and people can now waste their Sunday on doing laundry, heh... but most importantly, the flood might have time to subside...

random thoughts........

1. Been waiting for my turn to see the Director of Health regarding development project costing RM400,000. 2 hours past and I'm still here, contemplating if I should refill on the super-sweetened cardboard coffee they serve at the waiting lounge.

2. A young medical trainee just came in to see the Head of Medical department to report for an attachment with the hospital. High charged enthusiasm written all over his face, now I'm wondering when did I lose my charges. Or did I?

3. Must be getting old.

4. Flood in Tangkarason, and now Kg Sungai-sungai. One of my nurse's quarter's been evacuated, and the clinic is in caution for fast rising water level.

random pics... this week.......

This week has been a bit crazy, with work piled up high, and impossible datelines to meet. Well then, being paid by the good citizen's tax money, who am I to say impossible about anything needed to be done for the good of the people and country, right? Haha...

Now with a camera slimmer than my phone, it's easier to snap some pics to share...

On my way back to Beluran via Sandakan last Monday. As usual, sitting on my favourite row 25, I'm able to get a glimpse of the mountain before we took off.

Aerial view of KK, seen here is the state mosque right in the middle.

This is on board AirAsia on Tuesday morning. On Monday I received a call for a meeting on Tuesday afternoon. Since MAS online booking only allows 48 hours prior booking, I had to go with AA.

Breakfast, while waiting for the flight at Sandakan Airport.

Buckle-up!

Upon arrival, Ben came to fetch me at the KKIA T2, and we went straight to breakfast at Lido market.

Noodle for breakfast.

Wednesday morning I went back to Sandakan again, and while having breakfast at Mile 6, my BIG BOSS appeared on TV. This guy is severely feared in real life, he has his own way to tell you off, and most frustrating of all, when he screws you, he always makes sense. I actually respect him fully, and wish I'd be able to learn more from him.

Below is an ordinary view of the roadside...

... but this is an unusual sight - a lady carrying a huge basin of goods on her head, balanced. Wow, perfect gait and strong neck!

My lunch - soya milk with strawberry muesli. And Panadol Actifast for the headache and fever.

When the office is closed and people are all gone, I would have time to catch up with paperwork. During the day there would be a perpetual line outside my room, of people queueing to see me. Cam-whoring with self-timer and camera put on the light switch-box.

Dinner - nasi goreng daging special with lots and lots of ground pepper. Special because there's an added sunny side-up.

Varicella zoster infection or better known as chickenpox
Chickenpox is a highly contagious illness caused by primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV). It generally begins with a vesicular skin rash appearing in two or three waves, mainly on the body and head rather than the hands and becoming itchy raw pockmarks, small open sores which heal mostly without scarring.

Chickenpox has a 10-21 day incubation period and is spread easily through aerosolized droplets from the nasopharynx of ill individuals or through direct contact with secretions from the rash. Following primary infection there is usually lifelong protective immunity from further episodes of chickenpox.

Chickenpox is rarely fatal, although it is generally more severe in adults than in children. Pregnant women and those with a suppressed immune system are at highest risk of serious complications. The most common late complication of chicken pox is shingles, caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus decades after the initial episode of chickenpox.

pictorial report: 7 days ago.........

This year was started with a gusto to turn over a new leaf and leave sedentary lifestyle behind, and what better way to act upon that new year resolution than to flag it off with a morning jog on New Year Day itself... okaylah, 3 days into the New Year. So off we went, Team Overweight Luyang (minus one) to Tanjung Aru beach, all in our shorts and only I in my running shoes (actually dock shoes) together with my new SONY Cyber-shot DSC-T77 Mocha colour, just in case we feel like cam-whoring... which we certainly did.

One for the road.......

And one when we arrive... we certainly don't waste time.

We wanted to jog, but then we could not take pictures properly, so we decided to power walk instead... The plan was to exercise, nobody said we should not compromise, heh.

Peculiar things we see on the beach during power walking... one too many dead fish.

And sand crabs...

That sense of achievement expressed by Ben.

One too many Friendster style photos...

Dead crab on the log...

Sin Chan would have loved this, sand sculpture by (don't know who). I think it was trying to show us its 'morning inspiration' masterpiece...

The beach was packed-infested by school kids enjoying the last days of their long holiday...

Sabahans can sure appreciate art... this one on the tree is a sculpture called "recycling"...

We have the exact same picture in our old album when we were little, taken with the same snail... imagine how old this playground is.

Ah, the evidence of a popular New Year Practice, to throw away old underwear as a sign of throwing away bad luck...

And since one other new year resolution is to never miss a breakfast (as advised by the diet book) so we obediently headed to Tg Aru old shops to get breakfast.

Nah kau, hello sexy figures 2009! Heh.

sandakan it is.........!

the question..........

For the first time, like I said, I'd be around for the weekend, but only because I have a meeting till noon... after that I should want to be off! Now I am thinking... should I go to Lahad Datu, gosh I haven't seen that place for the longest time... or Sandakan, where I can get descent work-wear to last me till Tuesday next week... I haven't been doing my laundry, so now I had it, the lesson for bringing in the exact clothes I would need for a 5 days stay, thinking that I'd be going back KK also like usual.

i sing it myyyy waaaay.........

Back when I was still anti-karaoke, and sick of my staffs keep on trying to pull me to sing a song in front of everybody, I always get an excuse to get out of the said situation. I'd either slip out of the room, pretend I have a headache or sore-throat or dyspepsia, anything would do as long as I don't get forced to sing anything.

Once, an over-enthusiastic colleague was imposing on me that I have to sing one, and he would choose the song himself, then he came up with this song, My Way and said " Ah, inilah lagu ngam untuk Dr. Roddy, dia lah ini..." I was like, huh? What do you mean by that? Haha..

I guess I'll take it as a compliment, when my colleague would relate this song to me, as I have been known to want to do things my way, and more often than not, I get my way around it... So now, as the age increase, I've joined the ranks of uncles and aunties juara-karaoke singing my lungs out and enjoying myself at that... yea, must be the age factor. But I have to say, it is a well proven method of stress management ;-)

This is my favourite song for karaoke, the song which I would sing with my entire being, feeling and all that. First written by Paul Anka, popularised by Frank Sinatra based on an original French song Comme d'Habitude.
My Way
Paul Anka 1969

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full.
Ive traveled each and every highway;
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

I've loved, Ive laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
No, oh no not me,
I did it my way.

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And did it my way!

the worst time to get sick........

People have this crazy idea that doctors do not get sick... well, if that is true, how come I am having this temperature running, tight feeling on my chest, joint pain all over my fingers and knees and my throat feels as if I swallowed a bag of sand and I have these 2 cute red-eyes ala rabbit twinkling with streams of tears... because I'm sick, that's why...

And some smarty pants would suggest that Public Health isn't really medicine... darn I hate those comments... anyway, a sick doctor is a sick doctor, worry about the sickening ones and get on with life.

Work, as I noted in Facebook, has been overwhelming this week... paying off the sins of long leave, I guess. When I came to the office on Monday, I could hardly see the desk, and not two hours after I sat down sorting out the letters and other documents, a call came from the Headquarters asking that I should go back the next day to attend a meeting chaired by the state Director, meaning I have to be there.

In Beluran there is a pretty unique clinic for Maternal and Child Health, which was built somewhere around colonial time (or so it seems like it) and the unique part about this clinic is that, structurally, a part of it is built on the river bank, and another part is on stilts above the water. Now the water part of the clinic is sinking and cracks are forming on the walls, and the floor has now got split levels. I want to evacuate the staffs as soon as possible but we're still waiting for our old office building to be renovated. So now we're at the process of tendering the project to contractors to finish up the renovation, and this is the reason for my stress, the dateline to close the deal is next week, and we are still begging for help in drawing the plans, and putting up the scope of work / bill of quantity.

Now that I might have a meeting on this Saturday with the prospectors /contractors for this project, I might not be able to go back home and this might be the first Weekend I'm going to spend in Beluran. Actually I did spend a weekend in Nangoh once, but that doesn't count because it wasn't exactly spending the weekend here. Maybe I should go to Lahad Datu and visit my old friends in my previous clinic.. or just go to Sandakan, do a bit of shopping and come back on Sunday. I'll see... being sick like this makes me all manja and want to go home and see mommy.... haha.

Sigh... I hate being sick.

20090107

stress much........?

Yes, I do.

I didn't even realise that it is now lunch time, and since I have only 20 minutes left before another meeting starts, I'm going to nurse my throbbing headache, sinking into my hard sofa and listen to Pachelbel... gosh, I need a vacation already!

20090106

travel much.......?

Yes, I do.

Currently waiting for flight at Sandakan Airport, boarding AirAsia AK6081 to KK for a meeting this noon. Early year, the traveling warrant hasn't arrived yet, so we have to travel first and claim later.

Coming back to work tomorrow morning, with a line up of 2 meetings awaiting in Beluran.

a few words on vic and nisha.......

I was given the opportunity to say a few words during Vic and Nisha's Wedding Reception on the 28th of last month at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort. Saying a few words has never been much of a problem (been giving public health education for a living) except that this was a black-tie event. Yea, the pressure did compress on some nerves (not to mention the airways too).

But apart from all that, it was my greatest pleasure and honour to just do it for Vic. We went back all the way to early high school days, and heck, I've known this guy literally half of my life. We've been very competitive in many ways, and I have to admit that he has driven me to achieve much of who I am today - because I was kiasu, heh.

_____________________________________

Vic and Nisha,
I'm just posting the text here because I know I did stutter and slur a bit here and there on that day. I am very happy for the both of you, and hope that one day I'd also be lucky enough to find my soul mate, my better half and learn the maturity in commitment. I've got so much to learn from you guys!
Love, arteo
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,

I am especially glad to have to be here at this occasion, to celebrate this wonderful marriage of Vic and Nisha. I've known Vic since the early 90s during high school days, and that's about 16 or 17 years ago. Throughout all these years he has proven himself to be not only a great friend and brother, I can affirm to him being someone caring, that he is a good cook, he is polite, good hearted and all that bla bla bla as mentioned in the previous speeches.

But one thing that the other speakers fail to mention today, is that he can be quite 'distasteful' with his humour at times. so distasteful he is, that I heard Nisha had to think twice before talking to him again after their first encounter. You see, for his first impression, he told a joke to Nisha, and by thinking twice, she actually took 2 years before she spoke to him again.

Without much doubt, Vic's greatest achievement is in marrying Nisha - who looks absolutely stunning. Vic, you've found someone so beautiful, charming, intelligent... and Nisha, you've found... Vic. Well, whoever said marriages had to start off balanced anyway, right?

Vic and Nisha, on behalf of all your friends here, and those who could not make it today - Kee Thai, Adam, Frances, Doc Swee - we'd like to wish you both, a long happy life together, filled with love, health, and above all, laughter.

Thank you.

dreamy song in dusun...... explained!

Ha, few months back, in March to be exact, I posted a song lyrics by Jestie Alexius called Auku Insan Do Gumaab, and not knowing what it means, I posted for help to translate the song.

Just as a wonderful surprise, someone called Rem replied to that call last night, and gave the whole translation... THANKS REM!!!

This is what he wrote to me...

Rem has left a new comment on your post "dreamy song in dusun...?": 20080328
Dear Stranger :),

I had been trying to look for this lyric the last few weeks all over the net. And, of all the places -- I found it here!

Thank you so much.

And to return my gratitude -- this is my not-so-credible attempt to help you with the transilation. I'm a Dusun Bundu (Ranau), and this lyric is penned in Liwan's dialect (Tambunan). So to be honest, I don't fully understand... everything there.

I know this is an old entry. But just in case you're still in that 'dreamy mood', here the story (of the song) goes:

Selamat berjiwang! :)

Au ku insan do gumaab
Aku tak pernah (menyangka)

random pics.......

Ah, when I thought of random pictures, I didn't expect that these would be arranged randomly as well, makes it so hard to tell a story here.. anyway, I'll just explain the photos as I go along..

The first time I got a room with a window at Swiss Inn, KL. The only reason I got it was because the room I booked was not ready, and they gave me an upgrade for free. The space is slightly bigger than the usual I got on 2nf floor, the toilet more spacious and there was a window with a view.

I learned so much about architecture and design during the few weeks interactions with various engineers and architects, like why some doors need to be somewhere specific, and how designs, however creative, must meet form and fuctionality.

My loyal companion during afternoons post-prandial sleepiness - Starbucks Venti Mocha to-go, no whip, no foam, no nonsense, just the real stuff filled to the brim, thank you!

Leaf design, on my cafe mocha at Jesselton Coffee in Sandakan. My favourite hangout place while waiting for departure time to BKI.

Having lunch with Martin, Anne and Laisan at the House of Pancakes, where everything is served with pancakes, even meat and chili and brinjal and everything you can ever disgustingly imagine... But somehow, it's nice...

KLCC / Petronas Twin Towers - the icon of KL

Winter didn't come to MidValley this year, instead the theme was Carnival. Elaborate decos immitating circus and carnival was put up, and they even have a few shows a day - presenting clowns and ballerinas in weird colourful costumes, very nice.

That afore-mentioned room with a view also has also a toilet where the door didn't ram into the toilet bowl... wow, it was almost like luxury.

But the afore-mentioned view doesn't really deserve a second mention, I had my curtains drawn shut most of the time anyway...
