tools of trade.......

It's not the first time that someone gave me a wide eye when I told them I have, and use a few types of camera to take the pictures seen in this blog. Although I'd like to maintain that I am a photo-enthusiast rather than a photographer, for being the latter somehow makes it a little bit more stressful to be.

I do have a passion for cameras, yet being a photo-enthusiast or a photographer, means that one should put more emphasis on his or her photos rather than the camera that is in use. No doubt the types of camera / resolution / lenses do make a difference, I somehow am more interested in the creative art of photographic composition, and I'd like to maintain that the camera is just a tool, and what we produce with it is more important.

I wish I can say, just give me any type of camera, and I'll still give you beautiful pictures, but somehow that statement is not always true. But give a good camera to someone who cannot appreciate good photography, he'd still give you crap pictures, right?

Here are the cameras that I use, and the sample pictures taken with each of them. The pictures have not been cropped or manipulated (just resized) still in its original colour.

I got my Canon EOS 300D dSLR for a good deal from my uncle. I used to tell people that once someone starts using a SLR to take photos, he will never look back at a point-and-shoot anymore. True in some cases, but SLRs are pretty heavy to lug around, especially when carrying a few lenses along.

Another good thing with SLRs, other than the flexibility of interchangable lenses, it also allows add-ons, like this, for extra creative photographic effects. Here, I've attached a semi-fish eye lens (which is just a very-wide angle lens).

I own 2 types of semi-automatic cameras (which allow manual over-ride), my first was a Sony DSC-H9 which I also got at quite a bargain.

This is the latest member of the gang, a semi-automatic RICOH Caplio GX8. I got this to replace my other pocket point-and-shoot. Most of the more recent entries were taken with this camera. The plus point for this, is that it can take up to less than 1 cm macro and has a hot shoe that fits the common add-on flash.

My other point-and-shoot which I got for my own birthday last year decided to stop functioning properly just after its 1 year warranty expires. Up to date, Sony has stopped producing pocketcams with external buttons, and I don't really fancy those with touch-screen function. By far, I still think this is the best pocketcam I've used - for its handiness, compact size and ability to take supermacro pictures. Too bad Sony has stopped producing them, or else I wouldn't mind getting another exact one.

Last but not least, my handy 2.0MP Sony Ericsson 610i somewhat-of-a-camera that's built in to the phone. It has proven to be of invaluable help when I forget to carry along my usual pocketcam. Although I come from the school of thought that doesn't believe in hybrids (let a phone be a phone) but this gadget is able to take some descent pictures (usually when I am in a beggar-can't-be-chooser situation).

Oh ya, although I might say that photography skill is more important than the camera itself, I still am salivating over the idea of getting a Canon EOS 40D dSLR.

Then I take wicked pictures!!

random juke: sempurna........

I was in a cybercafe in Jakarta when I first heard this song, playing among a short list of other songs so I heard it over and over and over again in the period of 2 hours. Went around searching for the CD, and since I didn't know who sang it at that time, it was difficult. And when the sales lady asked me to sing her a part of the song so she'll recognise it, I was of course reluctant. In the end I went away with an album from Ungu.

This song has been done as a cover version in the movie LOVE, but I still like the original by Andra and the Backbone for its acoustic guitar accompaniment. Try it!
Sempurna
Andra and the Backbone

Kau begitu sempurna
Di mataku kau begitu indah
Kau membuat diriku akan selalu memujamu

Di setiap langkahku ku kan
selalu memikirkan dirimu
Tak bisa ku bayangkan
Hidupku tanpa cintamu

Janganlah kau tinggalkan diriku
Tak kan mampu menghadapi semua
Hanya bersamamu ku akan bisa

Kau adalah darahku
Kau adalah jantungku
Kau adalah hidup ku
Lengkapi diriku oh sayang kau begitu
Sempurna.. sempurna

Kau genggam tanganku
Saat diriku lemah dan terjatuh
Kau bisikkan dan hapus semua sesalku

Kau adalah darahku
Kau adalah jantungku
Kau adalah hidup ku
Lengkapi diriku oh sayangku kau begitu
Sempurna .. sempurna

Sayangku engkau begitu sempurna...
Sempurna... sempurna...

random juke: bukan diriku......

If you've seen the MTV clip of this song, you'd probably remember it. Shot in a short movie type, it shows Bam the lead singer of Samsons, leaving his current date to see about his old flame who was in distress after getting into a fight with her current boyfriend. So Bam ran all the way to see her again, while she patched up with her man, and Bam was left standing, watching from a distance.

The story line is a bit tragic to relate to real life, but the lyrics kept on emerging in my conscience and playing like a theme-song, twice this year. Probably that's why it is also the favourite Indonesian song for me in KK Box.
Bukan Diriku
Samsons

Setelah kupahami
Ku bukan yang terbaik
Yang ada di hatimu
Tak dapat kusangsikan
Ternyata dirinyalah
Yang mengerti kamu
Bukanlah diriku

Kini maafkanlah aku
Bila ku menjadi bisu
Kepada dirimu

Bukan santunku terbungkam
Hanya hatiku berbatas
Tuk mengerti kamu
Maafkanlah aku

Walau kumasih mencintaimu
Kuharus meninggalkanmu
Kuharus melupakanmu
Meski hatiku menyayangimu
Nurani membutuhkanmu
Kuharus merelakanmu

Dan hanyalah dirimu
Yang mampu memahamiku
Yang dapat mengerti aku

Ternyata dirinyalah
Yang sanggup menyanjungmu
Yang lama menyentuhmu
Bukanlah diriku

random pics: totally random......

Okay, I've come to the meniscus of my blogstipation and I felt like I should just declare this blog hopelessly inactive, for want of a better entry, I don't know who am I writing for anyway, and I do question myself at times, is it important for me that I post something up here, and what am I trying to prove anyway? Anyway, people that has (probably unfortunately) come across my path these few days (or weeks) probably would have been stung by my flying sarcasm or be (lightly) disturbed by my unjoyous attitude towards life and all that it brings, well, maybe I should apologize here for my backside kind of attitude.

But then again, some of them probably deserved it, heh.

So I picked up my camera today, went around my room and my study-area, and started taking pictures of stuffs that I could connect with for the past few weeks or so. Maybe they will tell a story better than I would have put it myself.

I started collecting miniature aircraft models, mostly of the commercial passenger carriers type, when I had this fascination on aviation and how a long heavy hollow tube of aluminium can be lifted off the ground by the help of a pair of flaps and a couple of jet engines. Aerodynamics, of course, but still I am fascinated. So here, I have collected more than a dozen of aircraft models, and at the background you can see the rest of the fleet, bokeh style.

I think I have a general fascination for things that fly. Other than aircraft models, I also collect Superman figurines and paraphernalias, and I have dozens of Superman toys, big and small, not so big, and not so small... serious. I'd show you if you want to see it...

I'm using Burberry Brit by Burberry ever since I could afford proper fragrances. The only other fragrance I'd use is Romance by Ralph Lauren. I've not changed my selection of perfumes much.

Blogstipation. I've been sitting here on this study table throughout my hight school period, and now it is still serving its purpose as my internet station. Currently I am not blogging well, and I'm just sitting doen here staring at the keyboard, and I noticed "Pause / Break"...

I've also not been taking much pictures with my dSLR, which explains why my CF cards are here on the table, instead of in the camera where it belongs... Next week there's a boat outing planned in Beluran, and I see an opportunity to go out and get good pictures.

Ermm.. dudes, can I get my 50mm 1:1.8 back? :-)

Outside my room there's a cross hung above the door, and on closer inspection, I noticed that cobwebbs have started to appear around it... a graphic representation of my spirituality I suppose...

ENT doctors usually say, never put anything smaller than your elbow into your ears... but hey, would I give up one of life's greatest pleasures over a medical opinion? I clean my ears everytime after shower, sometimes up to few times a day - it's almost compulsive, and Ben does it too. We have otitis externa at a rate of about 10 times a year but we don't care!

Another of life's greatest pleasures, good coffee... I fell in love with illy coffee when I was out in HK with Dr Yusof, and a few other officers on a government sponsored trip.

Got this World Youth Day jacket in orange and blue (seemingly Malaysian contingents all over wear this colour outside the country) cool. Didn't go to the event myself, but sometimes I wish I did.

Some years ago, you wouldn't find me dead reading these types of self-help books, but somehow as I age, I mellowed down on my opinionated-ness and actually read the whole trilogy of Richard Templer's Rules.

This is actually my second set of stones rosary. the first set was lost and I've used that excuse for the longest time for not saying the rosary. I eventually got it replaced, and almost exactly the same one as the first one, except for the earlier had a wooden Benedictine cross and this one, metal.

Like I said, I am in my deep moody philosophical mode, but funny that I am actually reading on philosophies in humour and jokes. Quite a good read, the book disusses the philosophy behind some jokes, and another tries to explain existing philosophies with the help of bar jokes and such. Got them recently from Kinokuniya during my last trip to KL.

Been subscribing to Men's Health forever and they're filling up shelves in my room. The only thing that's gotten lighter through the process is my wallet, and I am still fat to date.

Looking forward to the trip to manila next month with Junior and Mesh. I made a point to buy tour-guide books on the particular place that I am visiting.

I like seaweeds. No, I love seaweeds. No carbohydrates, packed with protein and very little fat. The only downside is the salt that makes me thirsty everytime I eat it. and there are so many ways to enjoy seaweeds, as suggested at the back of the package.

One thing that cannot be eaten, the lime flour that gives the packaging about 80 percent of its weight.
After seeing the show that China put up during the Opening Ceremony of Olympics Beijing 2008, suddenly the caption "made in China" doesn't sound so substandard anymore. I was totally awed, and impressed by the choreography of the dancers and the whole multimedia orchestrations. Impressed! Impressed! Impressed!

random pics: last week in kl.....

I know I've not been writing for a while... I've noticed that too... I could have said it was just a blogstipation like usual... but I think it's something more than that... it's like my mind is in a mess... and hence words won't come out right... and then I saw this mannequin at Metro Jaya... and I wish I was full of ideas like that... light bulbs everywhere...

This is more like me... with planes and tanks and all other sort of weird things crashed in together... graphic representation of my state of mind..... I like it...

The traffic jam in Old Klang Road... nothing new actually... this is on the way to pick Tones up from work... don't know how he could stand being in surgical master programme... and currently he's being oppressed by the wicked witch of the west... or was it east... or was it bitch of the west... one of those la...

Went out makan with Ben and ChiaLing in MidValley... for this meal we had succulent suckling piglet and roasted duck for dinner... nice but pricey... can you imagine this dish cost RM28.00 (not iclussive of 10% service charge and 5% government tax) and it's not even served with rice...

Ben with new haircut, and ChiaLing, now a staff nurse at Sunway Medical Centre - 5 star hospital.

And then I was also in town to celebrate Martin's birthday... although I was terribly late due to the traffic jam on Federal Highway... and waiting for Tones to return from escorting a burn patient to Selayang Hospital...

The view from their apartment in Bukit Jalil... really really really nice...

Martin's birthday cake(s) was unconventional... and very accommodating... since all of us have different favourites when it comes to cakes... so the compromise - a variety of sliced cakes from Secret Recipe... compromise is good...

We did the whole tv sitcom thingy of waiting behind the couch for Martin to come out from... ermmm... whatever he was doing in the loo... and shouted SURPRISE!!! and took pictures of his stunned face... haha... this is him making a wish in a very indecent state... I wish he had more clothes on...

One more for the road... on 10sec self timer...

Ah... back to work with new Xero-X sunshades and a new Starbucks mug... should keep me motivated for the rest of the week... I hope...

I think not... can't wait to come back to KK tomorrow... Loriot's wedding on Friday, and I'm the Reader during Mass...

Hey! I'm attending Mass!

random juke: bewitched, bothered and bewildered

Song of the shaken by love, from the point of view of a woman... this I've posted is actually the actual full lyrics which has a stonger ending compared to the commonly popularised cover version which leaves the singer still in so much wanting. The complete version is actually funny to read, with a splash of sarcasm injected in, but also quite packed with blatant sexual allusions.

Lorenz Hart
After one whole quart of brandy
Like a daisy, I'm awake
With no Bromo-Seltzer handy
I don't even shake

Men are not a new sensation
I've done pretty well I think
But this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink

I'm wild again, beguiled again
A simpering, whimpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Couldn't sleep and wouldn't sleep
When love came and told me, I shouldn't sleep
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Lost my heart, but what of it
He is cold I agree
He can laugh, but I love it
Although the laugh's on me

I'll sing to him, each spring to him
And long, for the day when I'll cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

He's a fool and don't I know it
But a fool can have his charms
I'm in love and don't I show it
Like a babe in arms

Love's the same old sad sensation
Lately I've not slept a wink
Since this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink

I've sinned a lot, I'm mean a lot
But I'm like sweet seventeen a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

I'll sing to him, each spring to him
And worship the trousers that cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

When he talks, he is seeking
Words to get off his chest
Horizontally speaking, he's at his very best

Vexed again, perplexed again
Thank God, I can be oversexed again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Wise at last, my eyes at last,
Are cutting you down to your size at last
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more

Burned a lot, but learned a lot
And now you are broke, so you earned a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more

Couldn't eat, was dispeptic
Life was so hard to bear
Now my heart's antiseptic
Since you moved out of there

Romance, finis.
Your chance, finis.
Those ants that invaded my pants, finis.
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more

random juke: how can you mend a broken heart..

I didn't know that know that the Bee Gees were the one who first popularised this song as I heard it first by Al Green, the jazz-blues version. The song came up again in Sex and the City movie. I don't have it here yet for download, but once I do, I'll put it up.

There's something funny about being in the blues, rather than finding songs that can soothe the heart, we have the tendency to immerse ourselves in soul-biting lyrics like this. Well, I guess we find comfort in thinking that the singer is validating our hurt by singing exactly what we feel in our hearts, that's why we listen to it...

Barry and Robin Gibb, 1970
I can think of younger days when living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do.
I could never see tomorrow
But I was never told about the sorrow.

And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend a this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again.

I can still feel the breeze that rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by
We could never see tomorrow
None said a word about the sorrow.

And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again.

monday blues......

Been feeling a bit low on morale today, having come back from a week of absence from the office, the mountain of documents on the table to clear, a mortality case summary to finish, a meeting with the administration team to be held...

Anyway, I forgot to bring back my sunglasses from KK, and feeling a bit flamboyant from watching Sex and the City with Ary and Anna, I got myself a fashionable Xer0-X sunshades for RM200 (original price RM325 before bargain)... I don't know how long I'd be wearing this, I'm sure the SATC euphoria will pass soon and I'd be left feeling silly about wearing something like this, haha... anyway, some people thought it's cool.

What do you think?

Been wanting to have Nescafe at work but for the past 3 weeks, I've not had a [proper] coffee mug to drink from, so from my last trip to KL I got this Starbucks red coffee mug for RM28.00.

Ah, out of focus... whatever la... malas want to be perfectionist now.

p/s: Hope somebody's presentation went well today.

sigh.......

...the whirlpool again...

recap......

Dear friend...

As mentioned before, there are times when we missed out on the opportunity for a beautiful friendship just because we were trying too hard to look for a perfect relationship, and as it has been shown to be true, many bonds in friendships are stronger than those found in relationships. So my friend, don't step back. You may not know what you're missing...

I've been following the progress of your whole story, and as it were, my own heart is also still raw from a recent assault, and I know what you're going through... take heart, dear friend, for in this life, we are all pilgrims, wandering about and around, looking for a way to go back home. But until we do, we still have many sunrises, sunsets, and dark moonless nights to endure. And when the moon is slow to show, you'd be lucky to have someone to come and build a bonfire for you. But chances are, we won't always be lucky. So we'd be happy to have someone, to sit through the dark night with.

And in many instances, we'd rather be happy than lucky. No?

randon juke: everything you want.......

Been feeling a little bit of blues lately and tuning in to the old songs archive didn't really help, the end of the 20th century songwriters were especially talented in making you feel bad about your love-life, hahaha.

Okay I take that back. Few songs got stuck in my head as I got some reflection done, songs that has pulled a string sometime long ago and now they're back to do it again.
Everything You Want
Vertical Horizon

Somewhere there's speaking
It's already coming in
Oh and it's rising at the back of your mind
You never could get it
Unless you were fed it
Now you're here and you don't know why

But under skinned knees and the skid marks
Past the places where you used to learn
You howl and listen
Listen and wait for the
Echoes of angels who won't return

He's everything you want
He's everything you need
He's everything inside of you
That you wish you could be
He says all the right things
At exactly the right time
But he means nothing to you
And you don't know why

You're waiting for someone
To put you together
You're waiting for someone to push you away
There's always another wound to discover
There's always something more you wish he'd say

But you'll just sit tight
And watch it unwind
It's only what you're asking for
And you'll be just fine
With all of your time
It's only what you're waiting for

Out of the island
Into the highway
Past the places where you might have turned
You never did notice
But you still hide away
The anger of angels who won't return

I am everything you want
I am everything you need
I am everything inside of you
That you wish you could be
I say all the right things
At exactly the right time
But I mean nothing to you and I don't know why
And I don't know why
Why...
I don't know

random juke: i'll be there......

Berry Gordy Jr
You and I must make a pact
We must bring salvation back
Where there is love, I'll be there

I'll reach out my hand to you
I'll have faith in all you do
Just call my name and I'll be there

I'll be there to comfort you,
Build my world of dreams around you
I'm so glad that I found you
I'll be there with a love that's strong
I'll be your strength, I'll keep holding on

Let me fill your heart with joy and laughter
Togetherness, well that's all I'm after
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
I'll be there to protect you
With an unselfish love that respects you
Just call my name and I'll be there

If you should ever find someone new
I know he'd better be good to you
'Cause if he doesn't, I'll be there
Don't you know, baby, yeah yeah
I'll be there, I'll be there
Just call my name, I'll be there

Just look over your shoulders, honey

I'll be there, I'll be there
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
Don't you know, baby, yeah yeah
