Most families gather for dinner, but my family starts coming in at lunch. Much of the talk while getting together revolves around newest gadgets and techies - this year a few flaunt ipods and iphones and netbooks and such.
However, one tradition remains - the ancestral honour - by serving food and (symbolically) asking them to dine before all of us. Mom usually is the main chef, preparing the main for the whole feast - a variety of traditional must-haves and some other yearly specials.
Soft drinks and coffee for the ancestors
Plain rice
The table set-up for the (symbolic) ancestral dining
One of the traditional must-haves - steamed yam and pork (khiu nyuk)
Pork in soy sauce (mun bak)
Pork cooked with black fungus, button mushroom, shiitake and lily bulb
Curry crab with secret spice
Chilly prawn
Standard issue - fried noodle with omelet
All year round favourite - crispy roasted pork (siew nyuk)
Bean (foochuk) curd soup
Pork cooked with baby corn, button mushroom and shiitake
Mandarin oranges big and small
